What is an iFrame?

Looking for a way to bring rich client experience and data visualisation into your Clinked groups? You may be able to accomplish your goals by embedding an iFrame in a Note. Thereby providing access to external content from various sources or systems into a single portal for members to easily work together.

This article will explain:

What is an iFrame and how to utilise it?

An iFrame is an external webpage embedded inside another. This functionality can be used to insert a piece of content from different sources into your Clinked portal for your group members to see.

You can insert an iFrame using the Notes tool. Notes are powerful tools within Clinked to customise your member's experiences. They can be used as your Group's Home page, documents for collaboration with members, data visualisation from other systems or video content designed for members.

Notes can be used with embedded iFrames to deliver video content, dashboards from business intelligence tools, Google Docs for collaboration, and many other uses.

How to allow domains for iFrames?

iFrames basically bring a page in another domain and display it in a note. That is why the domains you would like to use in iFrames need to be added to the allowed domains list first. This can be done in account settings by an account administrator (super admin).

To allow domains in iFrames please follow the instructions below;

  1. Navigate to the account settings
  2. Select “Security & Authentication”
  3. Locate the “Allowed domains for iframe links” section
  4. Type the domain you wish to allow in the specified section (please see the details below)
  5. Click the “Update” button to finish

Tips on adding domains

  • Make sure to exclude the first section of a URL (“https://” and “www.”). Instead of “https://www.clinked.com”, you would only need to add “clinked.com”.
  • You also don’t need to include the path section of a URL, which comes right after the domain name. Instead of adding “clinked.com/features/white-label-mobile-app/” (which is a link to a specific page) you can only add “clinked.com” and all pages of that domain will be allowed.
  • For some domains it is important to include the subdomains (a specific section of a website). You can see these on the URL right before the main section of a domain name. For example if “support.clinked.com” is added, all support page domains will be allowed in iFrames

How to embed iFrames into a note?

After the intended domain is allowed as explained in the previous section, members can embed links as iframes in a note.

To embed an iFrame in a note, please follow the steps below:

  1. Navigate to notes
  2. Create a new note
  3. Select “Insert” from the toolbar to view the options
  4. Select “iFrame”
  5. Check to see if your domain is allowed
  6. Paste the full URL of the page you would like to embed in the designated section
  7. Click the “Insert” button

When you insert the iFrame, you will be able to view it on the note. However please remember to save the note itself for the iFrame to be saved in the note before leaving.

It is also important to note that not all websites allows iFrames to be embedded. X-Frame-Option or Content Security Policy (CSP) header configuration in HTTP response prevents from embedding the iFrames.
